A “megawad” mod for Doom II
DOOM: Blood Ops Mod is a fan-made “megawad” mod for Doom II, and more specifically, Brutal Doom. A megawad is a substantial mod for games based on the id Tech game engine, comparable in size to the original game release.
This mod adds a number of large environments, increases the difficulty compared to the base game, and brings in new story and game modes. The mod is free but does require the original game and several other mods to be installed.
New game content
DOOM: Blood Ops adds several new game areas, some quite large compared to the original maps, as well as a lot of new missions to play through. It includes a supplementary story created by the mod creator (and, thus, not cannon) and introduces a number of new enemies to do battle with. There is also an original soundtrack included with this mod.
Increased difficulty and new game modes
The mod increases the difficulty level of the game, which may make it unsuitable for some players. Along with the difficulty changes, the difficulty skills have been rebalanced, changing how the difficulty settings affect the gameplay. The mod also adds a horde mode, where players face endless waves of enemies and must try to stay alive for as long as possible.
Not for newcomers
All of the additional content puts this mod on par with an official release in terms of the quantity of new content, but the mod itself is likely to be intimidating to players who are new to Doom. Both in the sense that the game is noticeably harder, but also because there are many requirements in terms of other mods being installed.
